Mick will be singing “The Flowers of Manchester” live at Old Trafford on Wed’s 30th Jan, the song will be performed during the half time interval of the SKY televised match between Man Utd and Portsmouth.
Dave Hulmes, a committed Manchester United fan has persuaded Mick to to re-record The Flowers of Manchester, the song based on Eric Winter’s poetic tribute to the victims of the 1958 air crash.
This new rendition has been recorded both to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the disaster and to raise money for the Manchester Kids charity http://www.manchesterkids.com
Dave Hulmes said:
“I have a copy of Mick’s original EP and over the years have worn it out listening the song that evokes that terrible night and holds memories for Manchester United fans of a certain generation. As the 50th anniversary approached, I wanted to remind younger fans of the impact of the event and do something for a local charity. A few phone calls later and Mick kindly agreed to re-record Flowers and Audrey Winter, Eric’s widow, kindly gave it her blessing.”
The CD has been produced by another folk legend, Phil Beer of Show of Hands, and contains a new arrangement and a reworking of the original recording. November 2006 A musical evening in celebration of my 70th birthday at Exeter City FC St James Centre in November with my family, friends from ECFC 100 club and local folk clubs. Hughie and Tony can’t make it as they have an annual committment to the Stan Hugill weekend. However a little Emu told me I might be needed for some Caribbean tunes that night.
Later in the year it’s down to more hard work sorting out an appearance at the Barnfield Music Club Christmas Night on Friday 15th December ( tkts from Theatre).
This will be followed by my own Annual Christmas night with the Old Porch Band at Countess Wear Village Hall on the following night Sat. 16th December @ 7.30pm.( Tkts. £7.50 inc buffet. Chqs. to Gill Tipping, 62 Exe Vale Rd. Exeter. EX2 6LF.
12 April 2006
Sorry I have not been as busy as I thought but 2005 was a bad year personally though I did my usual rounds of local charity gigs. 2005 was only lightened by a trip to MAN U with EXETER CITY FC in January where I had the pleasure of presenting the MAN U museum with a mint copy of ‘THE FLOWERS OF MANCHESTER’ EP. and a trip to LIVERPOOL in September to celebrate CLIFF HALL’s 80th Birthday and do a final, final fling with CLIFF,TONY,HUGHIE and JOHNNY MAC at Hughies Everyman Club night.
Last Month I returned to Hughies club where I had a packed house and a great night. So I am back and enjoying singing again and looking forward to a special night with two special musicians.
An EVENING with MICK GROVES at the PLOUGH ARTS CENTRE Gt. Torrington, Devon on Friday 28th April 8pm. Box Office 01805 624624. Tkts £9,£8, £7.

20 Year promise fulfilled
As reported in the Manchester Evening News and Exeter’s Express and Echo, Mick used the Manchester united vs Exeter City FA cup tie as the perfect background for generously keeping a 20 year promise to donate his recording of “The Flowers of Manchester” to the Manchester United museum. The song forever associated with the 1958 Manchester United Munich Air disaster. See www.munich58.co.uk for more information on this sad period in Manchester United’s History. (See attached picture)
